Annual Meeting Awards

ASI New Investigator Award

Purpose:
To reward the best presentation by a new investigator selected to speak in the New Investigators Symposium at the ASI Annual Scientific Meeting.
 
Eligibility:
Postgraduate students and postdoctoral investigators (with up to 3 years’ research experience after completion of PhD) who have been ASI members for the preceding year and the year of the award and have paid their subscription by April 1 of the current year.

Application procedure:

  1. Submit your abstract via the conference web site by closing date for early registration and abstract submission for the annual scientific meeting (ASI 2017 – TBC)
  2. Select the ASI New Investigator Award from the pull down menu during abstract submission
  3. Send a copy of your CV, and letter of support from your supervisor to (ASI 2017 – TBC) including “ASI New Investigator” in the subject line.

Assessment Criteria:
Excellence and originality of scientific content, clarity and organisation of oral and audiovisual presentation, as judged by a panel, none of whom is a past or present supervisor of any speaker.

Value:
$1000 sponsored by ASI and presented at the meeting.

BD Science Communication Award

Purpose:
To foster clear communication of exciting science to the media and the public.

Eligibility:
Postgraduate students and postdoctoral investigators (with up to 3 years’ research experience after completion of PhD) who have been ASI members for the preceding year and the year of the meeting and have paid their subscription by April 1 of the current year.

Application procedure:

  1. A “non-scientific language” Submit your abstract via the conference web site by closing date for early registration and abstract submission for the annual scientific meeting (ASI 2017 – TBC)
  2. Select BD Science Communication Award from the pull down menu during the abstract submission process.
  3. The meeting organizing committee will short-list abstracts for oral presentation. Selected applicants will make an oral presentation at the annual scientific conference in the BD Science Communication Award session.

Assessment Criteria:
The award will be made to the presentation judged to best combine good science with clear communication by a panel consisting of immunologists, a science journalist and a lay person.

Value:
$500 sponsored by BD and presented at the meeting.

Immunology and Cell Biology and ASI Student Poster Prizes

Purpose:
To reward the best student posters at the ASI Annual Scientific Meeting.

Eligibility:
Students who are ASI members for the year of the meeting. The student must be first author on the poster.

Application procedure:

  1. Submit your abstract via the conference web site by closing date for early registration and abstract submission for the annual scientific meeting (applications are now closed for 2013)
  2. Add the title of the abstract you wish to have considered into Student Poster Prize box during the submission procedure
  3. At the meeting place a sticker on the poster (stickers supplied at meeting)

Assessment Criteria:
Excellence and originality of scientific content, clarity of presentation and visual impact, as judged by a panel of immunologists.

Value:
$500 per award sponsored by Immunology and Cell Biology and ASI and presented at the meeting.

Graham Jackson Memorial Mucosal Immunology Prize

Purpose:

To reward the best poster or oral presentation by a research student or postdoctoral investigator in the area of Mucosal Immunology at the ASI SIG Mucosal Immunology Workshop/Symposium.

Eligibility:
Postgraduate students and postdoctoral investigators (with up to 2 years’ research experience after award of PhD) who are current ASI members.

Application procedure:

  1. Submit your abstract via the conference web site by closing date for early registration and abstract submission for the annual scientific meeting (applications are now closed for 2013)
  2. Select the “Mucosal Immunology” category during the submission procedure
  3. Add the title of the abstract you wish to have considered into the Graham Jackson Memorial Prize Box during the submission procedure
  4. For posters, place a sticker which will be supplied by the Registration Desk, in the top right hand corner of the poster

Assessment Criteria:
Excellence and originality of scientific content in Mucosal Immunology, clarity of presentation, as judged by a panel of peers, none of whom is a past or present supervisor of any applicant.

Value:
Graham Jackson Memorial Mucosal Immunology Prize:
$250 each sponsored by ASI SIG MI and presented at the meeting.
Normally one prize is awarded, however in exceptional circumstances up to three may be awarded.

Society for Mucosal Immunology:
From time to time the Society for Mucosal Immunology sponsors one or more poster prizes up to the value of $500.

Travel Bursaries

Purpose:
To enable student and early postdoc members to attend the ASI Annual Scientific Meeting.

Eligibility:
Postgraduate students who have been members of ASI for the year of the meeting and have paid their subscription by April 1. Eligibility has been extended to early postdocs (up to 3 years post completion of PhD) who have been full or student members (not interim) of ASI for the year prior and the year of the meeting, and have paid their subscription by April 1 in the year of the meeting. Bursaries for most awardees will include support for travel to the meeting (based on the cost of cheapest economy class airfares) and early bird registration costs. Bursaries for local awardees (within a 2h commute of the meeting) will include support for earlybird registration and will not include travel support.

Application procedure:

  1. Submit your abstract via the conference web site by closing date for early registration and abstract submission for the annual scientific meeting (ASI 2017 – TBC)
  2. Send a brief CV including publications and previous conference presentations (Max 4 pages, as word doc) and a copy of your abstract to the ASI Honorary Secretary at (ASI 2017 – TBC), including “ASI Travel Bursary” in the subject line.

Assessment Criteria:
Primarily the scientific excellence and clarity of abstract, the CV and, to a lesser extent, the distance from the site of the meeting, as judged by a panel of judges appointed by the local organising committee of the meeting

Value:
Conference Registration plus a reasonably priced return domestic airfare to Sydney will be reimbursed upon presentation of receipts to (ASI 2017 – TBC). ASI student and early postdoc members located outside of Australia/New Zealand are also eligible, but the maximum airfare that will be awarded will be equivalent to the cost of travel from the most distant branch within Australasia.
