Background
During the pandemic, in 2020 ASI introduced an exciting new award category that repurposed funds originally committed to the International Travel Awards (Postgraduate and Postdoctoral categories), the Gordon Ada Senior Travel Award, and the Jacques Miller Senior Travel Award.
These Career Advancement Awards have replaced the previous International Travel Awards and allow for a broader scope and flexibility to apply for support as needed.

Postgraduate Career Advancement Award
Purpose:
The purpose is to recognise and further advance the research of student members of ASI at a critical point in their career. The use of the prize money is determined by the awardee but must directly support their research, with a focus on career benefit. Please note that Higher Degree students, Honours students and Research Technicians are all eligible to apply for Postgraduate Career Advancement Awards.
Examples include, but are not limited to:-
- Up to AUD 7,000 for PhD completion funding or Post-PhD gap funding (equivalent of ~3 month extension)
- Up to AUD 5,000 for travel e.g. international travel for a conference/lab visit or domestic travel and accommodation to perform experiments or learn a new technique
- Up to AUD 3,000 for reagents for experiments which are not already covered
- Up to AUD 3,000 for publication costs
- Up to AUD 3,000 for work-life balance support e.g. childcare cover or to buy out annual leave
- Up to AUD 3,000 for attendance of online workshops, training courses
- Up to AUD 3,000 for software or computer* please include justification for why your institute/university does not already supply the software or computer
Eligibility:
- Higher Degrees students, Honours students and Research Technicians are eligible to apply.
- Applicants must have been full (not interim) Ordinary or Student members of ASI in the year preceding the application.
- Applicants must have paid their membership subscription before 1st April of the year of application.
- Applicants who have previously received an ASI Postgraduate International Travel Award or Postgraduate Career Advancement Award are ineligible.
- Applicants cannot apply for multiple items in the same application.
- Applicants must include a clear budget in the application, if successful this is the amount awarded.

Successful Recipients - how to claim your ASI Award:

For PhD gap funding or post-PhD gap funding, a timeline and letter of support from your supervisor is required to claim your award.

Postdoctoral Career Advancement Award
Purpose:
The purpose is to recognise and further advance the research of early-mid career members (up to 6 years postdoctoral) of ASI at a critical point in their career. The use of the prize money is determined by the awardee but must directly support their research, with a focus on career benefit.
Examples include, but are not limited to:-
- Up to AUD 7,000 for PhD completion funding or Post-PhD gap funding (equivalent of ~3 month extension)
- Up to AUD 5,000 for travel e.g. international travel for a conference/lab visit or domestic travel/accommodation to perform experiments or learn a new technique
- Up to AUD 3,000 for reagents for experiments which are not already covered

- Applicants must have paid their membership subscription before 1st April of the year of application.
- Applicants who have previously received an ASI Postdoctoral International
- Applicants cannot apply for multiple items in the same application.

Jacques Miller Career Advancement Award
Purpose
The purpose is to recognise and further advance the research of mid-senior career ASI members.
Mid-senior career researchers (>14 years post-PhD) are invited to apply for the Jacques Miller Career Advancement award. The use of the prize money is determined by the awardee but must directly support their research, with a focus on career benefit.
Applicants can apply for up to AUD 6,000, with an additional AUD 3,000 for childcare-related expenses.
Examples include, but are not limited to:
- Conventional international travel award
- Publication costs
- Attendance of online workshops, conferences, training
- Software for data analysis
- Or similar
Eligibility:
- Greater than 14 years postdoctoral experience
- Applicants must have paid their membership subscription before 1st April of the year of application
- Applicants must hold continually financial membership for at least 5 years prior to the year of application
- Previous recipients of an ASI Senior Travel Award or current members of the ASI Executive are not eligible to apply, however, previous recipients of Postgraduate and Postdoctoral International Travel Awards may apply.
