At the 2016 ASI Council meeting, a review of ASI's Special Interest Groups was proposed. The goal is to revitalise existing SIGs and to generate a platform to create new SIG's.

This review process will hopefully result in several active SIGs running lots of activities for the benefit of our membership, actively involving the membership and spanning across different fields of interests of ASI members.

To this end, and in accordance with the ASI constitution, we are asking our membership to get involved and are inviting you to apply (or re-apply) for SIG status.

Briefly, what we are asking for:

1. a vision and goals for the SIG proposed
2. a proposed Management Committee, with a chairperson and representation across appropriate branches
3. a brief outline of the proposed activities and initiatives
4. a rationale for the SIG – how the SIG and its activities will serve members

In return, Council will provide additional funding to support SIG initiatives and meetings.

Current SIGs must reapply, and new SIGs are welcomed. Creativity in regards to topics, activities and initiatives is welcome.

Please send your proposal to Elissa Deenick ([email protected]) no later than 15 October 2017. Questions regarding new or existing SIGs can be addressed to ASI Hon Secretary Elissa Deenick ([email protected]) or ASI President Susanne Heinzel ([email protected]).

ASI Constitution – Special Interest Groups 43:
43.1. The Council may establish Special Interest Groups (SIGs) to provide a focus for members working in particular subject areas.
43.2. Each SIG shall select a Chairman and other such officers as it deems necessary to constitute a Management Committee to conduct its own business.
43.3. Each SIG may hold such meetings from time to time as it sees fit and may make By-Laws (not inconsistent with this Constitution and any Guidelines, Rules and By-Laws made thereunder) for the conduct of its affairs. Each SIG shall furnish an Annual Report of its activities together with a statement of its finances to the Council prior to the Annual General Meeting of the Society.
43.4. Each SIG shall conform to such rules and have such powers, functions and duties as are determined from time to time by the Council.
43.5. Council may, at its discretion, pay to a SIG such amounts as it may determine from time to time to enable the SIG to meet expenses or reimburse it for expenses incurred in connection with it carrying out its functions.
