Group Leader - Cancer Research

Group Leader

  • 80 hours per fortnight with monthly ADO's
  • Appointments will be considered at the level of new group leader (Level C) through to experienced

Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre (Peter Mac) is recruiting a Group Leader to increase the capacity and
efficiency of our “discovery to translation” cancer research pipeline. Our focus is to recruit the very best
cancer researcher to lead their own independent research group with a broad strategic fit within our
program themes: Cancer Evolution and Metastasis, Cancer Biology and Therapeutics, Organogenesis and
Cancer, Cancer Immunology, and Computational Biology.

The Group Leader will develop and lead a team conducting internationally significant and innovative
research to enhance our understanding of cancer development from fundamental biological principles of
cancer to progression, evolution and translation into clinical practice. This position is responsible for:

  • Developing and managing a research program.
  • Providing effective leadership and supervision to direct reports.
  • Contributing to research leadership.
  • Participating broadly in Cancer Research Division programs

This position is:

  • Ongoing, Full-Time
  • Onsite presence essential at 305 Grattan Street, Melbourne, VIC 3000
  • Basic Salary Range: $146,050.32 to $226,517.20 AUD p.a.
  • Advertising from Wednesday, 5th March to Friday, 9th May 2025

Position Summary

Our focus is to recruit the very best cancer researchers to lead their own independent research group with
a broad strategic fit within our program themes: Cancer Evolution and Metastasis, Cancer Biology and
Therapeutics, Organogenesis and Cancer, Cancer Immunology, and Computational Biology.

The Group Leader is responsible for ensuring that their group’s financial and operational processes are
sustainable and in accordance with regulatory, commercial and ethical obligations. They will be driven to achieve excellence in research outputs, mentorship and make a significant contribution to the local,
national and international scientific communities.

Appointments will be considered at the level of new group leader (Level C) through to
experienced Professor (Level E).

An honorary academic position may be made available through the Sir Peter MacCallum Department of
Oncology, University of Melbourne.

Selection Criteria

  • A PhD or equivalent in a relevant area/discipline
  • A substantial track record of career achievement in a field of research relevant to cancer be it wet and/or dry laboratory based translational and/or clinical
  • A demonstrated capacity to manage a research budget commensurate with research output and funding income
  • A strong national reputation and an emerging international reputation
  • A track record of securing significant funding for the research activities through peer- reviewed commercial philanthropic or other appropriate sources
  • A track record of successful supervision of graduate and postgraduate students
  • A history of having made significant collegiate contributions in medical research locally and nationally
  • Ability to promote productive research collaborations between Institutes and Universities
